The Egyptians were the first people to use perfume and the earliest use of perfume bottles dates to around 1000BC. This was later followed by the ancient Chinese, Hindus, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks and Romans. The earliest use of perfume bottles is Egyptian and dates to around 1000 BC.
Perfume Bottles changed dramatically in the late 1800's when the Art Nouveau era came into existence. This lead to floral motifs, cherubs and other Art Nouveau designs being used to enhance the appearance of the bottles. Silver was often used to decorate bottles and silver bottle holders were often used. Sometimes the bottles were made of glass and rimmed with silver. To the perfume bottle collector this has the added advantage that silver was always hallmarked, thus making the dating of the bottles much easier.
